CPC uncovers circulation of sub-standard cigarette, warns consumers on health implication of consumption
Following a discovery from its surveillance activities, the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has uncovered a sub-standard cigarette, Pine Classic, as being in circulation in Nigerian markets, warning consumers to be wary of its consumption.
According to a statement from the Council, the imported cigarette has been found to have fallen short of labeling requirements, expected of all cigarettes meant for consumption in Nigeria.
The Council, in its statement, disclosed that the cigarette has no production and expiry dates, neither does it have manufacturer’s address, conditions that are all mandatory for all cigarette products meant for Nigerian markets.
Similarly, the Council said the Nigeria Industrial Standards (NIS) mark could not be found anywhere on the pack of the cigarette, making it to be suspect for consumption by consumers.
The product, the statement from the Council said, is not registered in the country and hence does not comply with any known standard, thereby exposing consumers to un-imaginable risks and dangers.
“The Council is therefore seizing this opportunity to alert Nigerian consumers of the existence of the illegal cigarette and advising them to be wary of its consumption as it has not complied with necessary standards” the statement added.
As part of a nation-wide clamp-down on the circulation of the cigarette, the Council’s surveillance and enforcement officers from its headquarters in Abuja and zonal offices have been directed to comb the nooks and crannies of Nigerian markets for the illegal product in order to save consumers.
Meanwhile, CPC has warned the unscrupulous business people behind the smuggling of the cigarette into the country, threatening that those caught with the product would face the full wrath of the law.
ENDS.
